After receiving information about the ruthless killing of a dog<\/a>\u00a0on the streets of Patiala, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India and the deceased community dog\u2019s caregivers \u2013 Sandeep Singh, Kritika, Deveshi Khanna, Sourav Khosla, Vicky and Pankaj \u2013 worked with the Kotwali Patiala Police Station to register a\u00a0first information report<\/a>\u00a0(FIR) against the accused, Sanjay Gupta, under Section 429 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860, and Section 11 of The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960. The accused allegedly slit the canine\u2019s throat with a large knife. PETA India is awaiting the postmortem report.<\/h2>\n

\u201cThose who abuse animals often move on to harming humans. For everyone\u2019s safety, it\u2019s imperative that members of the public report cases of cruelty to animals such as this one,\u201d says PETA India Cruelty Response Coordinator Sinchana Subramanyan. \u201cWe commend Patiala police for promptly registering an FIR and sending the message that cruelty to animals won\u2019t be tolerated.\u201d<\/p>\n

PETA India recommends that perpetrators of animal abuse undergo psychiatric evaluation and receive counselling, as abusing animals indicates deep psychological disturbance. Research shows that people who commit acts of cruelty to animals are often repeat offenders who move on to hurting other animals, including humans. A study published in\u00a0Forensic Research & Criminology International Journal<\/em>\u00a0states, \u201cThose who engage in animal cruelty were [three] times more likely to commit other crimes, including murder, rape, robbery, assault, harassment, threats, and drug\/substance abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n
